Artist StatementI am a multidisciplinary artist tip toeing the line between joyful optimism and tongue-in cheek cynicism. My work is guided by an insatiable curiosity for alternative, historical modes of representation beyond what is the norm in our modern society.
Through the medium of painting, illustration, printmaking, three dimensional practices, and now digital art and graphic design, I create art exploring both nature and humankind. My studies in art history, architecture, and anthropology are evident in my choice of subject matter; one may find themself recognizing some of the (especially ancient) references in my work. I believe learning about past and current societies and their different modes of visual representation is a key way to encourage tolerance and sensitivity. They are also a major source of inspiration for creative expression. Another large focus of mine is animal and mythological subject matter. As someone anxiously observing the loss of connection to nature and wildlife in our modern time, I often reflect on the beauty and importance of animals, including their mythological and spiritual status for many cultures around the world. With the decline of handmade craftsmanship as well in our mechanized culture, I champion the continuation of traditional and analog methods of making in an effort to preserve the value of the hand made object. Despite my cynicism for our current late capitalist existence, my love for art history, cultural studies, and the general ingenuity of human beings resonates throughout my collection of work. Some of my pieces present as silly, sarcastic, or satirical, while others are earnest in their passion and appreciation of a subject matter. Through my art practice I aim to encourage viewers to think beyond the constraining modes of thought ingrained in our society and inspire discussion and education.
